Neapolitan pizza is the thin, soft-centred style from Naples, baked fast in a very hot wood-fired oven so the crust blisters and chars. Downtown Kelowna has three places that cook this way, all within a few blocks of each other.
Antico Pizza Napoletana
Location: 347 Bernard Ave, Kelowna, BC
Antico is the downtown choice for Naples-style pizza: simple, quality ingredients and a wood-fired oven that chars the crust properly. Order a Margherita first to judge the dough. It's a short walk from City Park, which makes it an easy pick before or after an evening by the water.
The Curious
Location: 1423 Ellis St, Kelowna, BC
The Curious is best for wood-fired pizza with a full bar and a later night. According to its website, the oven is a hand-built Stefano Ferrara forno from Naples, lit by 11:30 am, and the restaurant is open Monday to Saturday from 11:30 am until late, with Sunday brunch from 9 am to 2 pm. Pizzas run from $20 for a Margherita to $28 for the meat-heavy Norcino, and there's a vegan option made with Daiya cheese. Happy hour is all day Monday and 2 pm to 5 pm Tuesday to Saturday.
La Vela Pizzeria
Location: 444 Bernard Ave, Kelowna, BC
La Vela is a family-owned Italian restaurant, and the lowest-priced of the three wood-fired spots downtown. Its menu lists a Margherita with San Marzano tomato and fior di latte at $17, a Margherita di Bufala at $20 and a Diavola at $21, plus pasta and homemade tiramisu. The catch: it's closed Tuesdays and opens at 4 pm on Mondays; other days it opens at 11:30 am. Reservations are by phone.
Casual local pizzerias are the places for a big menu, takeout, delivery and a family table. Kelowna's best known is DunnEnzies, with Pandosy Pizza as a takeout alternative in the south end.
DunnEnzies Pizza Co.
Location: 1559 Ellis St (Downtown); 4638 Lakeshore Rd (Lower Mission); 203-1740 Pier Mac Way (Airport Village), Kelowna, BC
DunnEnzies is a long-standing local pizzeria with three locations in town, best for a large menu and a relaxed meal with family or friends. The menu runs from classic pepperoni to butter chicken and donair pizzas, and specialty pies cost $21 small, $27 medium and $31 large on its published menu. The Ellis Street location is the original, with live music and comedy nights, and stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. The Lakeshore Road location in the Lower Mission has a backyard-style patio under a large old plane tree and a daily happy hour from 3 pm to 5 pm. The Airport Village location closes earlier, at 8 pm to 9:30 pm depending on the day. It's a convenient stop after a day at the best wineries in Kelowna.
Pandosy Pizza
Location: 102-2689 Pandosy St, Kelowna, BC
Pandosy Pizza is a takeout and delivery pizzeria, best for a cheap weeknight order in the south end. Its website lists daily specials, such as one large 3-topping pizza for $21.99 on Thursdays, and a walk-in price of $22 for a large 2-topping. It opens at 3 pm Monday to Thursday and 11 am Friday to Sunday. Delivery has a $20 minimum order.
Gourmet pizza in Kelowna mostly comes from places better known for other things, like craft beer or a seasonal menu. Both picks below are downtown on Ellis Street.
BNA Brewing Co. & Eatery
Location: 1250 Ellis St, Kelowna, BC V1Y 1Z4
BNA is known for its craft beer, but the pizza is inventive and made with quality ingredients. The Kelowna menu lists round pizzas such as burrata or fennel sausage at $24, and Detroit-style square pies at $26. It works for a night out with a group, and there's a bowling alley on site.
Central Kitchen + Bar
Location: 1155 Ellis St, Kelowna, BC V1Y 1Z5
The pizzas at Central are a cut above, and the menu changes with the seasons and what's available locally. The current menu lists house-made-crust pizzas at $23.75, such as a Korean BBQ beef with kimchi, and a gluten-free crust for $5 extra. The room is stylish enough for a special occasion.
The best pizza outside the city is at the wineries and restaurants a short drive north or out Highway 33. Plan these as part of a day out rather than a quick dinner.
Garden Bistro at Peak Cellars
Location: 2290 Goldie Rd, Lake Country, BC
The Garden Bistro at Peak Cellars is best for pizza with a glass of wine on a winery patio. The bistro menu lists pizzas from $25 for a Margarita to $29 for a pepperoni with pineapple and hot honey, with a gluten-friendly crust for $5 and vegan cheese for $4. The winery lists bistro hours of 11:30 am to 8 pm daily. It's north of the city in Lake Country, so it pairs best with a day of tastings.
Olympia Greek Taverna
Location: 145 Highway 33 W, Kelowna, BC
Olympia isn't a pizza place, but its flatbread pizza is a strong order, especially with a cold beer. Go when the rest of the table wants Greek food.
The best pizza tips are to eat seasonally, use lunch deals and specials, and look beyond downtown.
The best setting is often outdoors. Take a pie from Antico or La Vela to City Park, a few blocks down Bernard Avenue, or have a beer and a pizza on the patio at DunnEnzies on Lakeshore Road after a day at the beach. In summer, the Garden Bistro patio at Peak Cellars is the pick for a view.
Antico Pizza Napoletana on Bernard Avenue is the best pizza downtown for authentic Neapolitan pies. Its wood-fired oven chars the crust properly. The Curious on Ellis Street and La Vela Pizzeria, also on Bernard, are the other two wood-fired options a few blocks away.
Yes. Several pizzerias list a gluten-free crust on their menus: Central Kitchen + Bar ($5 extra), The Curious ($5), La Vela Pizzeria ($4.50) and the Garden Bistro at Peak Cellars ($5, listed as gluten-friendly). DunnEnzies makes any of its pizzas as a 10-inch gluten-free pie for $20, and its menu notes the gluten-free crust isn't vegan.
BNA Brewing Co. & Eatery and Central Kitchen + Bar are known for the most inventive pizzas in town. Central's menu changes with the seasons and what's available locally, and BNA also serves Detroit-style square pies.
DunnEnzies and Pandosy Pizza are the best local options for takeout and delivery. DunnEnzies has three locations (Downtown, Lower Mission and Airport Village), and Pandosy Pizza on Pandosy Street publishes daily specials and walk-in prices on its website.
