What is middle school like in Kelowna?

Middle school in Kelowna is where kids start moving between classrooms, with subject-specific teachers for math, science, English, social studies and PE, plus electives like band, art, technology education, home economics and drama, and organized sports teams. It's where they start building time management, organizational skills and academic independence. Bell times vary by school. Most middle schools run after-school activities, homework clubs, leadership programs and intramural sports, and the advisory or homeroom system gives every student a consistent adult mentor for all of middle school.

Transition Tip: The move from elementary to middle school is hard for some kids. Go to the orientation events (usually held in June before Grade 6 entry), encourage your child to join one activity or club in the first month, and stay in touch with teachers through the school's communication platform. Most students settle in comfortably within the first few weeks.

    French Immersion in Middle School

French Immersion continues in middle school at select SD23 schools: École KLO Middle for the Mission area, École Dr. Knox Middle for Glenmore, École H.S. Grenda Middle for Lake Country and École Glenrosa Middle for the Westside.

Kids coming out of Early French Immersion elementary programs carry on in FI at these schools. Core subjects (science, social studies and language arts) are taught in French, while math and electives are typically in English. If your child is starting French later, Late French Immersion entry at Grade 6 is offered at École Glenrosa Middle; contact SD23 for current availability.

    Sports & Extracurriculars

Middle school sports in Kelowna include basketball, volleyball, track & field, cross-country running and soccer, at both competitive and intramural levels. The Central Okanagan Middle Schools Athletic Association runs inter-school competitions throughout the year. Most schools also have band (concert band, jazz band), and for kids who'd rather do something else there are drama productions, art clubs, coding clubs, student council and environmental clubs.
