The best off-leash dog parks in Kelowna, BC, plus seasonal dog beaches and leashed trails, with notes on parking and crowds.
In this article:
The best off-leash dog parks in Kelowna are the Rutland Recreation Park off-leash area, Mission Recreation Park Dog Park, and North Glenmore Dog Park. This guide covers the city's fenced off-leash parks, seasonal dog beaches, and leashed trails, with notes on parking, crowds and what each spot is actually good for.
The city's dog spots fall into two groups: fenced off-leash parks like Rutland, Mission, North Glenmore, Ellison, and Enterprise, and big trail parks where dogs stay on leash.
Location: Rutland Recreation Park, 645 Dodd Road, Kelowna
Rutland's temporary off-leash area is popular with dog owners in central Rutland, and it gets busy after work and on weekends. The City of Kelowna's website lists its current layout and status.
Location: 4105 Gordon Drive, Kelowna
For the Lower Mission, this fenced park inside Mission Recreation Park is the handy choice. It's a decent size, well kept and split by dog size, with the rest of the park right there. For somewhere to eat after, see our guide to pet-friendly restaurants.
Location: Abbott Street, Kelowna (beach access)
City Park is the downtown waterfront park, but it isn't one of the City's designated off-leash areas. Keep your dog leashed and check the City of Kelowna's website for current rules, since beach access changes by season. For off-leash swimming downtown, the City's list includes Poplar Point Dog Beach and Lake Avenue Beach Access, and a walk along the boardwalk afterwards is part of the routine. Bring towels.
Location: 2150 Glenmore Road N, Kelowna
North Glenmore is a large, fully fenced local favourite, with plenty of room to run, benches and a friendly crowd of regulars. Parking can be limited at peak times, and the ground gets muddy after it rains.
Location: 4720 Old Vernon Rd, Kelowna
Ellison is the pick for north Kelowna. The fully fenced park out toward the airport has separate areas for small and large dogs, a reputation for being clean and well kept, and usually a quieter crowd.
Location: 2500 Enterprise Way, Kelowna
Enterprise is a small, basic fenced area for a quick run, and a tree-lined path leads down to a bit of water access where dogs like to swim. Only let your dog off if it comes back when called (the etiquette notes at the end of this guide apply here).
Location: East Kelowna, end of Hollywood Road South
Scenic Canyon isn't a dog park, but its extensive trails welcome dogs on-leash, with views of the canyon and the Okanagan Valley. Keep your dog under control and clean up after it, and see our Kelowna hiking guide for more trail tips.
Location: South Kelowna, Lakeshore Road
Bertram Creek suits a slow walk, with easy trails and good views of Okanagan Lake. It's an on-leash park, so keep leashes on and give other park users room.
Location: Kelowna North, overlooking downtown
Knox is the classic local hike, and dogs must be leashed on its trails (the off-leash Knox Mountain Dog Park field is the exception). The trails are well kept and the views from the top are excellent, but it's a climb, so bring water for both of you, especially in summer.
Location: Lakeshore Road, South Kelowna
Like Scenic Canyon, this isn't a dog park, but it's a massive stretch of real wilderness on the edge of the city with trails that allow leashed dogs. Expect longer hikes, mixed terrain and excellent lake views. Carry water and watch for wildlife.
Dog park etiquette comes down to water, bags and watching your dog. Bring water, especially in July and August, and bring bags and use them. Watch how your dog is playing and step in before it turns rough; everyone else at the park, with or without a dog, will appreciate it.
No, dogs aren't allowed off-leash in City Park, because it isn't on the City's list of designated off-leash areas. Check the City of Kelowna's website for current rules. For off-leash swimming downtown, use a designated dog beach such as Poplar Point.
Yes, Mission Recreation Park Dog Park on Gordon Drive and Ellison Dog Park on Old Vernon Rd both have separate areas for small and large dogs. Both are fenced off-leash parks.
North Glenmore Dog Park, at 2150 Glenmore Road N, is the Glenmore area's dog park, and it's large, popular and fully fenced. Parking can be limited at peak times, and it gets muddy after rain.
Yes, dogs are allowed on the trails in Knox Mountain Park, as long as they're on leash. The Knox Mountain Dog Park field is the designated off-leash area. Bring water for both of you in summer, because it's a climb.
Bring water for your dog, poop bags for clean-up, and a leash to any dog park. A towel is a good idea too, especially if you're visiting a dog beach or a park with water access.
